International student having an online telehealth consultation with a MediLeave doctor

How International Students Can Access MediLeave Telehealth

This article is intended for general education only and isn’t a substitute for personalised medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If something about your health is worrying you, speak with an AHPRA-registered telehealth GP or request a medical certificate online where clinically appropriate.

Get started with online doctor consultations

Australia-based international students can visit MediLeave for online care when they need non-emergency advice from a registered doctor. You can book online consultations for general healthcare concerns, mental health management and support, prescriptions where clinically appropriate, online medical certificates, specialist referrals, pathology and imaging referrals, and follow-up appointments.

All you need to make a telehealth appointment is a device, internet access, some basic identification information, and a payment method. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) patients may also be eligible for reimbursements after their visit, depending on your provider and policy.

Please note: online telehealth is not intended for serious or life-threatening conditions. If you are experiencing severe symptoms that need immediate care, call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department. Seek immediate attention for severe injuries or trauma, difficulty breathing or chest pain, sudden and severe illness, or a mental health crisis needing urgent assistance.

Telehealth is ideal for students who need to:

How do you get a digital prescription or eScript sent to your phone?

If you’d like to receive your medication through an electronic script (eScript) — the digital link or token sent to your phone or email — you’ll need your IHI number so your prescription can be digitally issued and dispensed. An Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) is a unique 16-digit number.

If you don’t have an IHI number, that’s okay. Your doctor can provide a paper prescription instead, which you can take to any pharmacy in Australia.

International students can apply for an IHI number through Services Australia, even without a Medicare card. It’s free to apply and comes with benefits such as digital prescriptions and eScripts.

Can international students use OSHC with MediLeave?

Students enrolled in an Overseas Student Health Cover plan may be able to claim and apply for reimbursements from their provider, depending on their provider and policy. Check with your OSHC provider to learn more about eligibility and how to claim.

How much does telehealth cost?

Prices vary depending on the type of consultation you select. Many students can be reimbursed by OSHC for at least part of the cost. Payment is typically made up front when you book. MediLeave offers flat, fixed, affordable pricing with no extra charges on weekends or public holidays.

When should I seek emergency care?

Telehealth is designed for non-urgent conditions. Always seek emergency care if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe injury or trauma
  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain
  • Sudden illness that is severe or concerning
  • A mental health emergency that requires urgent assistance

When in doubt, always seek emergency care by dialling 000. You can also walk into your nearest hospital emergency department if you feel you need immediate care.
