Sick leave, public holidays & your QLD certificate
There's no separate "Queensland medical certificate" — the Fair Work Act 2009 is national law, so a certificate issued by a MediLeave doctor is valid for QLD employees the same way it is everywhere else in Australia. What does catch Queenslanders out is how the state's public holiday calendar interacts with sick and carer's leave.
A public holiday during sick leave isn't "used up"
If a Queensland public holiday falls on a day you would normally work while you're on paid personal/carer's leave, you're treated as being on the public holiday for that day — it isn't deducted from your sick-leave balance. That matters in autumn, when QLD stacks several holidays close together.

Are online medical certificates legal and valid for work in Queensland?
Yes. Online medical certificates are valid, legal and carry the same weight as one issued in person. The Fair Work Act 2009 is national law, so there’s no separate Queensland rule — a certificate reviewed and signed off by an AHPRA-registered doctor is recognised by QLD employers the same as any other. The only difference is that it’s issued virtually.
Will my Queensland employer accept a MediLeave certificate?
Generally, yes. Employers in Australia are required to accept medical certificates from registered practitioners as evidence of illness or injury. Every MediLeave certificate includes a unique verification code your employer can confirm online. Some workplaces have their own leave policies, so it’s worth checking yours if you’re unsure.
How does a public holiday affect my sick leave in QLD?
If a Queensland public holiday falls on a day you’d normally work while you’re on paid personal/carer’s leave, that day is treated as the public holiday and isn’t deducted from your sick-leave balance. Note that in 2026 Anzac Day falls on Saturday 25 April and Queensland doesn’t add a substitute weekday, so there’s no extra day off that week — normal sick-leave evidence still applies if you’re unwell around it.
Can I get a certificate in regional or remote Queensland?
Yes — anywhere in Queensland with an internet or phone connection, from Brisbane to Mount Isa, Cairns or the Torres Strait. Telehealth is especially useful in regional and remote areas where GP appointments can be scarce or a long drive away, and during the Far North wet season when travel can be difficult.
Do QLD universities and schools accept online certificates?
Yes. Queensland universities and education providers accept medical certificates as supporting evidence for special consideration, deferred exams, extensions and absences. A dated telehealth certificate confirming you were unwell is what those processes generally require. Online certificates are issued to patients aged 16 and over; for younger children a parent can request a carer’s leave certificate instead.
Do I need a Medicare card, and what are your hours?
No Medicare card is required — overseas students studying in Queensland are welcome too. Requests are taken 24/7, and telehealth consults run daily from 7am to 11pm AEST. Because Queensland doesn’t observe daylight saving, those hours are your local time all year round.
Can I get a certificate for a cold, flu or gastro?
Yes — these are usually short-term illnesses our partner doctors can often manage online. The doctor always uses their clinical judgement to decide whether an online certificate is appropriate. If your symptoms are severe, unusual or not improving, you’ll be advised to see a GP in person.
