Medicare Compliance:To be eligible for a Medicare rebate on your imaging, the referral must meet specific clinical criteria. Our doctors will assess your eligibility during the consult; however, some specialized scans (e.g., certain MRIs) may have restricted rebate criteria that require a specialist referral rather than a GP referral.

Why You Might Need a Radiology Referral
Radiology referrals are essential when your doctor needs an in-depth look at specific areas of your body to diagnose or monitor a condition. These referrals lead to imaging tests—such as X-rays, MRIs, and ultrasounds—that allow your doctor to view internal structures without surgery. This non-invasive method not only helps identify health issues but also aids in tracking progress or confirming a diagnosis.

Request Doctor-Reviewed Online Radiology Referrals Now
Online radiology referrals may offer a more convenient way to access imaging tests.
In Australia, online referrals are making it easier for patients to connect with medical practitioners remotely. Through telehealth, you can speak to a registered practitioner over the phone or video chat to determine whether you need X-rays, an MRI or even a specialist referral online. Referrals are provided if clinically appropriate, saving you from long waiting periods.
MediLeave is an Australian telehealth platform that provides access to the healthcare you need, all from the comfort of your home. Our streamlined process allows you to request an online imaging referral, assessed by registered practitioners.
Requesting radiology referrals without visiting a clinic is possible.
Because of Australia’s busy lifestyle, many people are looking for convenience and flexibility in healthcare. With telehealth making it simpler to find support for everyday concerns, people who are juggling work, study and family responsibilities find these services are particularly useful, especially when they need an imaging request in Australia.
The good news is that online consultations to request diagnostic imaging services work just as well as face-to-face ones.
Generally, Australians can use remote appointments to receive online radiology referrals or an electronic prescription service request with the same confidence and legitimacy as in-person visits. In addition, it makes requesting support for medical imaging services simpler. You can get the care you need more efficiently, without your schedule needing to adjust to meet everyday health needs.
Doctor-reviewed online radiology referrals help simplify the process.
Radiology is a vital part of healthcare. A doctor-reviewed radiology request online can make it easier to access imaging services without skipping proper clinical checks. Your request is reviewed by Australian-registered practitioners or doctors, who assess the information you provide and decide whether a referral is suitable for your needs.
Through MediLeave, you can receive a referral via an online doctor consultation, which is Medicare-compliant and will be accepted at any Australian diagnostic centre.
Australian-registered practitioners and doctors operating in line with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) standards will review your case, and if it’s clinically appropriate for your situation, they may recommend online diagnostic scans you can submit to a radiology service.
Once approved, the referral is delivered digitally directly to your phone. You can then proceed to your chosen clinic for the necessary scan. If your request needs more attention or a face-to-face appointment would be more appropriate, the doctor may recommend the next best step.

Frequently Asked Questions About Radiology Referrals
Do I need a referral for every type of imaging scan?
What information should I prepare before requesting a radiology referral?
How long do radiology referrals remain valid in Australia?
How do I obtain my radiology report?
Once your radiology report is ready, it will be sent to the GP that wrote the referral for you and stored in MediLeave’s medical record. We will then notify you via email and/or sms that the results are available. You will need to book a follow up telehealth consultation to discuss the results with a GP.
Can my regular GP review results that were issued by a MediLeave doctor?
Yes. During your initial consultation, you can ask for your results to be sent to your usual practice so you can review them with your regular GP. You can also have your GP contact the imaging centre directly and request that your results be forwarded to them. Please note that we’re unable to send your results to your GP on your behalf.
Will my scan be bulk billed?
Radiology may be bulk billed by many radiology centres. Please contact your local centre for their fee schedule
Will I have to book the test/scan in advance?
Most radiology clinics accept walk-in appointments for X-rays. CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds typically require a booking — call your chosen clinic after receiving your referral to arrange a convenient time.
Can I use my referral at a different radiology provider (e.g., I-MED, Lumus, Qscan, Capitol )
Yes. Under Australia’s Health Insurance Act 1973 and “Open Referral” system, you have the right and can take your MediLeave referral to any radiology centre/provider of your choice including a local independent provider.
Common providers you can use:
- I-MED Radiology Network
- Lumus Imaging (formerly Healthcare Imaging Services)
- Sonic Healthcare (including SKG, Queensland X-Ray, Hunter I maging, and Castlereagh)
- Capital Radiology
- Integral Diagnostics (including Lake Imaging and Apex)
- Vision Radiology
