Cholesterol is a type of fat that your body naturally produces, and it’s also present in certain foods. Most of it is made by the liver, with the remainder coming from your diet.
Your body relies on cholesterol to build and repair cells and to produce important hormones. However, when levels of “bad” cholesterol become too high, fatty deposits known as plaque can build up in the artery walls. Over time, this can narrow and harden the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
High cholesterol is very common in Australia, affecting more than two in five adults.
