Common Radiology and Imaging Referrals
Why You Might Need a Radiology Referral
Radiology referrals are essential when your doctor needs an in-depth look at specific areas of your body to diagnose or monitor a condition. These referrals lead to imaging tests—such as X-rays, MRIs, and ultrasounds—that allow your doctor to view internal structures without surgery. This non-invasive method not only helps identify health issues but also aids in tracking progress or confirming a diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions About Radiology Referrals
1. How do I obtain my radiology report?
Once your radiology report is ready, it will be sent to the GP that wrote the referral for you and stored in MediLeave’s medical record. We will then notify you via email and/or sms that the results are available. You will need to book a follow up telehealth consultation to discuss the results with a GP.
2. Can my regular GP review results that were issued by a MediLeave doctor?
Yes. During your initial consultation, you can ask for your results to be sent to your usual practice so you can review them with your regular GP. You can also have your GP contact the imaging centre directly and request that your results be forwarded to them. Please note that we’re unable to send your results to your GP on your behalf.
3. Will my scan be bulk billed?
Radiology may be bulk billed by many radiology centres. Please contact your local centre for their fee schedule
4. Will I have to book the test/scan in advance?
Once you have your referral, you can contact a radiology clinic to arrange your appointment. Some imaging tests require a booking, so it’s best to call the radiology centre to confirm their scheduling requirements.
5.Can I use my referral at a different radiology provider (e.g., I-MED, Lumus, Qscan, Capitol )
Yes. Under Australia’s Health Insurance Act 1973 and “Open Referral” system, you have the right and can take your MediLeave referral to any radiology centre/provider of your choice including a local independent provider.
Common providers you can use:
I-MED Radiology Network
Lumus Imaging (formerly Healthcare Imaging Services)
Sonic Healthcare (including SKG, Queensland X-Ray, Hunter Imaging, and Castlereagh)
Capital Radiology
Integral Diagnostics (including Lake Imaging and Apex)
- Vision Radiology
We recommend calling your chosen clinic to confirm they perform the specific scan you need (e.g., MRI or CT) and to check if they offer bulk billing and any potential “gap” out of pocket fees.
