Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is most commonly passed on through unprotected sexual activity. Many people who have chlamydia don’t experience any symptoms, so it’s possible to have the infection without realising it — or to unknowingly pass it on to a partner. When symptoms do appear, they may include painful urination, abnormal discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods. In men, it can cause testicular pain and discharge. If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious health issues, including infertility and ongoing pelvic or testicular pain. The good news is that once diagnosed, it can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
Sexually active people under 30 are at higher risk, which is why regular testing for chlamydia and other STIs is strongly recommended.
